A NATURALIZED POOL is an “artificially created ecosystem where the water is purified solely through mechanical and biological processes” (International Organization for Naturalized Bathing Waters. IOB).
Therefore, all processes using chemicals, UV (ultraviolet light), ultrasound or similar are excluded. Complete water renewal is only permitted in exceptional cases.
Thus, a naturalized pool is a Nature-Based Solution (NBS, as defined by the IUCN).
It looks like a conventional pool, with simple geometric shapes and no frogs or water lilies, but it differs because it has living water, a soft water for the skin, eyes and airways, and that it meets the hygiene and quality parameters established by the IOB. Depending on the type of filtration (fast or slow), the water area can be accompanied by a plant zone (integrated in the same pot or completely separated) or only by the biofilter, without plants. With biological filtration, the nutrient content can be reduced to the point that the biology in the tanks is barely visible. Especially developed robots help keep surfaces clean.

TheBIOPOOL is a member of the Iberian Group of Naturalized Bathing Waters, GIABN, an association of professionals in the design and construction of bathing areas purified by biological means in Spain and Portugal, and is also part of the International Organization of Naturalized Bathing Waters, IOB.
Founded in 2009, the IOB brings together 12 National Associations and more than 600 professionals and businesses in the sector, tasked with promoting research and supporting the development of applied technologies and regulations related to the natural bathing water sector.
